Our Roots

Our church was founded in 1729 making us the first church in the Town of Stoneham. Town meeting notices are still posted on the front of our church today.

In the 1960’s our congregation voted to join the United Church of Christ, which came into being in 1957 with the union of two Protestant denominations: the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian Churches. We are a group of Christians who are progressively committed to God’s Extravagant Welcome. This means that God is love and since Christ doesn’t discriminate based on ability, inability, status, mobility, who we love, skin color or a myriad of other qualifiers; neither should we! We are all of God’s children through the Spirit.

Our Beliefs

As a Christian congregation we believe the basics:

• We believe in God, in Jesus Christ and in the Holy Spirit. As an open and inclusive Christian community we accept and celebrate that we are all growing in our understanding of who God is and what it means to be faithful.
• We believe that questions and even doubt can be an essential part of our faith journey. We take the Bible seriously, but we don't interpret it literally.
• We believe that "doing" can be as important to our faith as "believing". We are called to follow Jesus, not just understand him.

At the center of our life together we affirm the Statement of Faith of the United Church of Christ.
