Oil Painting I

This 8-session introductory course in oil painting, will provide students with basic painting practices. Students will examine primary concepts such as composition, value, color, space and expression. Progress from basic concepts toward more complex topics. Student will be guided and encouraged through individualized instruction to enable the student to discover his or her own voice.
Prerequisite: Previous drawing experience is recommended. Material cost not included.

Watercolor I
Rodger Book
Traditional watercolor techniques will be emphasized in this 8-session class. We will experiment with wash, wet on wet, drybrush techniques, The student will learn to combine watercolor with drawing media and other materials. Working from direct observation of still life, landscape photographs and one's imagination. Students are encouraged to experiment and develop their own styles. Students will gain a solid foundation of watercolor styles.

Collage Class

This will be a six-week intensive course encompassing all aspects of collage, from formulating ideas to accomplishing finished projects. We will work in both 2D and 3D formats, generating work from diverse materials such as wax, string, metal, newspaper, wood, found objects, and other suitable elements. A highlight of the course will be a Saturday collection excursion in the International District and Pioneer Square, illustrating how objects for creating artwork can be discovered and incorporated. We will focus on how to formulate and execute new ideas about creating art. To that end,we will review slides of various collage artists, and create an open atmosphere for sharing and discussion about our own work.

Figurative Sculpture: Structure and Form

This 10-session class will be working from a live model. Students will begin with quick clay sketches and short poses, moving into longer poses and finished pieces. Different building and finishing techniques will be addressed along with anatomy as it pertains to figurative sculpture.
